Visual Rhetoric of Graffiti

Understanding the visual and textual literacy of the graffiti writer is shown through the deconstruction of text that is already there.  Their visual symbolism is imperative to communication within the community discourse as well as the community it is physically placed.  The importance of where the text is written within the community plays an important rule. The art of “tagging” or placing your name as a logo grants you respect and belonging to this discourse community.  The tagging has a great association with the graffiti writers identity. There is definite terminology specialized for this group in order to communicate with each other as well. The visual and textual literacy of this group is a one way message.  They are not looking for a response as much as showing their presence in the world
